Green Computing

Green Computing

What is Green Computing

  • •Simply Green Computing is the process of using computers & their resources in an eco-friendly manner.
  • •In broader terms ,it is defined as the study of designing,manufacturing/engineering,using & disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their environmental impact.

Goals in Green Computing

  • •Minimizing Energy Consumption
  • •Emphasize on recycling
  • •Reduction of hazardous materials
  • •Purchasing green energy
  • •Avoiding toxicity

Roads to green computing

  • Green Use: Minimize electricity consumption
  • Green disposal: Re-making an existing computer or recycling
  • Green design: Designing energy efficient computers & digital devices.
  • Green manufacturing: Minimizing waste during the manufacturing of computers & other devices.

Tips to make your computing usage more green

  • •Use LCD monitors than CRT monitors.
  • •Set Blackle as your home page.
  • •Put laptops in sleep or hibernate mode when not in use.
  • •Buy Energy Star labeled monitors,desktops,laptops & printers.
  • What is Energy Star?

The term green computing was probably coined shortly after the Energy Star program was began way back in 1992.
This program is designed to promote & recognize energy efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment and other technologies.

  • Buy green products.

  • Approaches to Green Computing

    1. Vitualization:
    2. Process of running two or more logical computer systems on one set of physical hardware.
    3. Power Management:
    4. A CPI allows an operating system to directly control the power saving aspects of it is underlying hardware.
    5. Power Supply:
    6. Climate savers computing initiative promotes energy saving and reduction of green house gas emissions by encouraging development and use of more efficient power supply.

    7. Storage:
    8. Video Card:
    9. Display:
    10. Materials Recycling

    Advantages and Disadvantages

    Advantages Disadvantages
    • Reduce risk of harmful chemicals
    • Energy & resource saving
    • Environmental friendly
    • Cost effective
    • Save space
    • High startup cost
    • Not readily available
    • Still in experimental mode
    • &#8226High maintainance cost

    Green Products

    Roads to green computing

So far, consumers have not take care on ecological impact when buying computers, they have cared only about speed & price.
Therefore my aim through this article is to make your attention on Green Computing & start to move with green products to save our future.

It’s not easy not being green.

    So let’s go GREEN !!!!!!!
